“Out of all the people I know who were robbed in Rio, most were robbed in two places: at the beach or at the nightlife district (Lapa). A bit MIA for a little while, but we’re back with a heartbreaking story. ❤️ Meet Ashley, a suicide crisis counselor and entertainer who chose to live abroad in Paris to discover more about herself. On her first few weeks out there, she received a call that her friend committed suicide. Ashley’s story on missing “the signs” and experiencing grief abroad showcase how suicide is more complex than many may believe. “We’re the last ones to board the plane. If we can, we’ll show up 2 hours early at the gate with packed bags and pretty attire, covering up the fact that we slept for 2 days in a nearby terminal. Funny as it sounds, it’s the type of traveling where we show up at the airport with no ticket. We don’t know where - and if - we will be going anywhere.” “Badwater Basin stands right behind a giant, black mountain, which forces all the downdrafts to enter where we visitors walked. Every few seconds, everyone would stop walking and hunker down as the winds whipped against our bodies. Whatever was on our heads or faces – hats, glasses, sunglasses, masks – were to be snatched by the thief of the wind, never to be seen again. Many outsiders are unaware of what life in China is really like, and some of the lame stereotypes making the rounds are just silly. Expat life there has its perks, and China does many things well. In the wake of anti-Asian sentiment and hateful, ignorant racism, I’d like to chime in and brag on the positives of Chinese society for just a minute. Here is a compilation of what I miss about life in China which has been sitting in my draft folder since September.⠀ “We spent the rest of the evening totally to ourselves taking the most amazing photos during sunset – not a single soul photobombed our tree-hugging moment. After that, we were able to rent bikes and merrily cycle home.” To me, the Khmer people are the heart and utter beauty of Cambodia. And while Phnom Penh might seem dull and boring at first glance, it’s a colourful and culturally abundant place to discover if you have the patience to dig a little deeper.⠀ To all the BFT friends online and around the world. You shouldn’t judge India solely on its ugly sides, but purposefully choosing to only see the beauty is ignorant. It’s a balancing act to understand a country – to both love it and to see its flaws plainly – and I’m still learning every day.⠀ Lockdown in France was a little too much wine, sleepless nights, and a sci-fi-like world outside. But it was also easy laughter with a new family, hours spent on Facetime, and learning to appreciate the tiny joys of everyday life.⠀ “All the natives had a rosy tinge to their cheeks. It was perhaps the climate that gave them this colour, because on my second day there, I started to develop this tinge on my cheeks as well. I felt ignorant and guilty. I had accidentally become one of the worst kinds of tourists – the unknowing tourist who feeds into illegal businesses and dooming children with their Western naïveté. The exact kind I’d so carefully avoided and arrogantly thought myself above.⠀
